Efforts are on stream to upgrade Operational Safety Standards at the Harrison’s Cave, through the development of a Cave Rescue and Evacuation Protocol.

To this end, the management of Caves of Barbados Limited will next week be staging a 10-day Cave Rescue and Evacuation Training Course primarily for internal staff.

The course, which will run from next Monday, November 23, until Friday, December 4, essentially targets cave guides, drivers, maintenance staff, security and management.

In explaining its rationale, Chief Executive Officer /Managing Director of Harrison’s Cave, Joe-Ann Grant, disclosed, "Cave rescue and evacuation is a specialised and unique area and this training is aimed at providing our staff with the skills to respond to any eventuality prior to the relevant agency assuming control of the situation.

The training will be facilitated by Canadian consultants Charles J. Yonge of ??????Alberta Karst Consulting and Brenda Holder and David Holder of Mahikan Trails Inc.
