The recent award of the Fully Accessible Barbados (FAB) accreditation to Harrison’s Cave is just the beginning.
That’s the promise from its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Joe-Ann Grant, who has pledged to work assiduously to make the facility "even more accessible."
Speaking in the wake of a recent presentation and unveiling of a FAB plaque near the entrance of the facility, Mrs. Grant said she and her team were committed to making the necessary adjustments to this end.
"Working with members of the Barbados Council for the Disabled is opening my eyes more and more, as I talk to them and get to better understand what their requirements are. When they completed their audit, they gave us tips and recommendations which we have already started implementing. Even though we might not be able to do everything in one go, over a period of time we are hoping that we can make the facility even more accessible," she underlined.
Earlier this week, President of the Barbados Council for the Disabled, David "Joey" Harper, presented Mrs. Grant with a FAB accreditation certificate, and assisted in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The Cave’s management, at the time, maintained that throughout the planning and development of the facility, Caves of Barbados Limited remained committed to the provision of a facility that would be fully accessible to persons with a variety of disabilities.
To date, the Harrison’s Cave is able to facilitate independent wheelchair users; persons who are wheelchair assisted; blind and visually impaired persons; as well as the deaf and hearing impaired.
The FAB award is an award given by the Council, which recognizes and awards companies for putting in place the requisite infrastructure to accommodate the physically challenged. cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
