Women and their coping strategies during the global economic recovery will come into sharp focus, when the Commonwealth Secretariat, in association with the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, hosts a three-day forum to address these issues.
The sessions, under the theme Women and the Global Economic Recovery, takes place from Saturday, June 5 to Monday, June 7 at the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s Headquarters, Harbour Industrial Estate, St. Michael.
The meeting will attract 15 local and regional journalists who will hear presentations from Hal Austin, of the Financial Times, who will speak on the topic: Global Economic Crisis: The Role of Women in Revitilising Economies on Saturday, June 5. There will also be presentations on Understanding Gender and The Cultural and Social Factors Hindering Women’s Empowerment.
The following day, Sunday, June 6, the highlight of the forum will be a Journalists’ Panel on the topic: Women as Decision Makers, which will be chaired by experienced journalist, broadcaster and gender trainer, Trish Williams.?? Speakers for this event are News Editor with the Nation Media Group in Kenya, Eric Shimoli and European Correspondent, Hindu Business Line in India, Vidya Raml.
Later in the day, there will be a case study on the Caribbean Women’s Story and this will be followed by a presentation from Sandra Husbands, on The Female Entrepreneur and a practical session.
The workshop will conclude with two presentations, the first by head of the Cave Hill School of Business, Dr. Jeannine Comma, who will speak on Business Education and Women; while Michael Green, author of the best-selling book, Philanthrocapitalism, will discuss Has Traditional Aid Failed Women?
It is a prelude to the 9th Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Meeting which will be held in Barbados next week.??jwilson@barbados.gov.bb
