The parishes of St. Thomas and St. Joseph will be abuzz with activity this weekend when De Heart Uh Barbados (DHUB) celebrations come off after a one-year break.

There will be additional attractions for Barbadians and tourists alike, who are expected to throng the Natural Heritage Department (NHD) at Sturges, St. Thomas, on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22.

This year’s package offers scenic tours to the redeveloped Harrison’s Cave in new electric-powered trams, as well as to the Flower Forest, Jack-In-The-Box and Welchman Hall Gullies, Aerial Trek, C.O Williams Flowers, Hunte’s Nurseries, Highland Adventure and Heritage Tour. Passports for the tours may be purchased from a number of locations, including the NHD, Cave Shepherd or Upbeat at a cost of $40.

In addition, a Farm and Craft Market will be set up on the large field next to the NHD, and vendors will offer a wide variety of produce, pottery, jewellery and art. Members of the Barbados Horticultural Society, the Flower Guild of the St. Michael and All Saints Cathedral will be on hand to showcase various types of floral arrangements. There will also be a free heritage fair where children can get their faces painted and a Petting Zoo with several animals, namely calves, pigs, rabbits and black belly sheep.

Entertainment will be provided by the Pride of Wilson Hill, Lottie and Mabel, the Haynesville Youth Club, poet Adrian Green, Masala Group, RubyTech, Storm Thrilla, Shanta Prince and Ayana John.

Technical Officer at the NHD, Rosene Reid, has urged families to come out, stating it would be a safe and relaxing environment for all. “You will not find this product anywhere else in Barbados. We have taken some of the most well known and visited attractions and we are giving patrons an opportunity to go to all of these places for a quarter of the price, because it is a $200 product persons will be getting for $40,” she said.

DHUB was developed 10 years ago to integrate community and nature-based tourism. Ms. Reid explained:  “We at NHD are demonstrating to members of the public that they can marry tourism and the environment in a sustainable way that benefits everybody. We want to help the residents of the Harrison’s Cave community to recognise that they too can get economic, social and environmental benefits from sustainable tourism.”
