Cell four of the Mangrove Pond Landfill will be officially opened on Sunday, July 8, at the Central Cricket Ground, Vaucluse, St. Thomas, at 3:00 p.m.

The new cell will be the sixth to be opened at the landfill, following on cells one, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B.

General Manager of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA), Stanton Alleyne, said cell four, which would start operating immediately, was once an old quarry used for mining marl and stone for the construction of the highway.

"We have extended it and put in liners to protect the water system and collect leachate from garbage.

He added that at a rate of 1,000 tonnes of garbage being deposited daily, the new cell should last approximately 9.2 years, but noted that with the diversion of waste through the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre, and other recycling projects on the island, refuse going to the landfill could be reduced by as much as 50 per cent.

"And when the Waste-to-Energy Facility comes on stream, the lifespan will be even longer," he added.

The General Manager pointed out that while cell one was already closed, cells two and three were still operating. "We can’t just move off those cells," he said, while giving the assurance that they would not be taken any higher.
