A name change for two departments under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development is on the cards.

This disclosure came from Minister Steve Blackett, during his feature address at a seminar entitled Housing the Elderly. It was hosted today by the National Assistance Board (NAB), at the Pan American Health Organization headquarters.

Minister Blackett disclosed that he would soon invite the Cabinet "to agree to a change in the nomenclature of the Welfare Department to that of the Department of Social Services; and the National Assistance Board to the Commission of Elder Affairs."

Speaking to a number of representatives from various governmental and non-governmental agencies, including the National Committee on Ageing, the Ministry of Housing and Lands, the Rural Development Commission and the Department of Constituency Empowerment, the Social Care Minister highlighted the NAB and Welfare Department as "two important entities".

He pointed out that "the changes… should better reflect their work in this modern era and also help to remove the stigma associated with the current names."
