This year???s National Senior Games are slated to be much better than in years past, with a number of new, fun events added for participants.

This disclosure was made today by Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steven Blackett, while speaking at the launch of the Games at his Ministry???s Warrens, St. Michael, location.

He explained that the event will now be a two-day affair, with an opening ceremony on Friday, April 17, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and track and field and other events being held the following day, Saturday, April 18.

There will also be fun events like sack races, egg and spoon races and tug-of-war on that day. Mr. Blackett also pointed out that his Ministry had forged a partnership with Q-in-the-Community as a way to raise the profile of the Games.

???We have proposed for the 2015 Games to introduce an event called the QFM 100 Metre Dash. During the months of February and March there will be a special qualifying event – a 50 metre dash – at each weekly Q-in-the-Community, with the first and second place winners of the 50 metre dash qualifying to participate in the senior games and earning a chance to win the QFM champion???s trophy and other prizes,??? he revealed.

The Minister also stated that his Ministry would transform the National Stadium into an Olympic Village atmosphere, which would include attractions such as jumping tents, rock climbing and face painting for children. Tents offering health checks will also be available for adults to visit.

In addition to field and fun events, seniors in this year???s games will also participate in netball, basketball, archery, tennis, table tennis, cycling, dominoes, hearts, 13-hand tonk and road tennis.

Persons wishing to participate can collect entry forms from the National Assistance Board, Country Road, St. Michael; National Sports Council, My Lord???s Hill, St. Michael; the Department of Constituency Empowerment, Warrens Office Complex, St. Michael; and any constituency office.
