The traditional 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover) Fair will take on a different flair this year.
When the annual event comes off, it will be under a new name ??? the Enviro Waste Expo, and will be held on Friday, March 6, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
The enhanced exhibition will also see the introduction of drama and other performances highlighting environmental issues to the line-up, which traditionally features recycling exhibits.
To facilitate this new thrust, schools, churches, community groups, service clubs, drama groups and other interested persons involved in waste separation and recycling; waste reuse; art and craft; waste management education in the form of drama and song; and environmental issues in general, are invited to come on board.
Persons interested in being a part of the Expo are asked to email solidwastebarbados@gmail.com, or to contact the Project Management Coordination Unit (PMCU), formerly the Solid Waste Project Unit, at 622-1606, by Friday, January 30.
Alternatively, persons may also submit entries such as drama pieces highlighting any of the above issues to the Unit???s 7th Floor, Warrens Tower II, Warrens, St. Michael, location, by the same deadline.
Waste Management Coordinator at the PMCU, Thora Lorde, explained the rebranding of the fair would see a greater focus being placed on those who were actively involved in dealing with environmental issues.
???One of the reasons for the new name was because we wanted it to be more all-encompassing,??? she said. She explained that while the 4Rs spoke to something specific, the new name allowed other environmental issues to be highlighted alongside those involved in waste management.
Ms. Lorde added that this year, a greater emphasis would be placed on persons who highlight environmental efforts through drama, song, art and craft.??She also noted that one of the thrusts this year was to encourage persons who were actively involved in environmental and waste management issues to come forward and show that there were measures that could be taken by the ordinary person.
