Charles F. Broome Memorial School has a lot to celebrate!

That is the word from Principal of the school, Hortence Carrington, who lauded her teachers and students for all-round performance in academics and extra curricula activities. "You have given us something to be proud about and worth recording," she declared.

Speaking today at her school’s graduation ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, she pointed out that "the sum total of experiences offered by a school was important in the lives of a child". She said teachers needed to be sensitive to their children’s needs by making positive comments and parents should be "strong", "supportive" and "motivating".

Mrs. Carrington, who retires at the end of this school year, then disclosed that the school had "unofficially" been informed that it placed first in the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination (BSSEE/Common Entrance Examination), among the Government primary schools.

She said out of the 99 students who wrote the Common Entrance Examination, 85 per cent received over 50 per cent of the marks in Mathematics, while 93.9 per cent received over 50 per cent in English. In addition, she stressed that 53 per cent of the 99 students achieved over 90 per cent in mathematics.

The principal contended that while the national mean in Mathematics was 60.9 per cent, the school’s mean was 80.1 per cent, and while the national mean in English was 63.38 per cent the school’s was 78.1 per cent.??????

The Parent Teachers Association (PTA) was also praised for its dedication and told that the school had been fortunate to have one that was "extremely supportive and is driven by a desire to let the students’ needs inform their decision". She added: "To effectively deliver a sound curriculum in the Barbadian context requires a reliable support system to supplement the limited resources provided by the Government."??

PTA President Cicely Chase, in her address, urged students to commit themselves to the pursuit of excellence, to continue to care and share and give back to their community.

The Student of the Year award went to Kaillya Callender-Ploche and Chelsey Austin who both achieved 243.40 B in the Common Entrance Examination and are on their way to Harrison College from September.
