This year’s Cable and Wireless National Spelling Bee saw the Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School emerging as winners in the competition.

The winning team copped the grand prize of airline tickets to Disney world for its four champion spellers and their teacher. The victorious pupils also received a trophy each and the Challenge Trophy, which was presented to them by the Minister of education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones.

The other finalist was George Lamming Primary School, whose four team members received a prize of $200 dollars each and individual trophies.

Among the semi-finalists were West Terrace and All Saint’s Primary Schools, whose team members received $150 each, while the Wesley Hall Junior School was high on the honours list for being the first school to achieve a perfect score of 12, in any segment of the competition, to date. Their team members each received a prize of $100.

While applauding the participating schools at this year’s finals, held in the lecture theatre of the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, Cave Hill Campus, yesterday, Minister Jones encouraged greater involvement in the competition, next year, from all primary schools across the island.

“Let me also compliment the schools that reached the finals, and say that it does not mean that those who were eliminated are not good spellers. They have shown great character and spirit,” said Mr. Jones.

One hundred and ninety-two class four pupils from 48 primary schools participated in the competition this year.
