Members of the public are being encouraged to take part in the several activities organised by the Child Care Board (CCB) to celebrate children during May, in celebration of Child Month.
Last year’s theme, Empower Our Families: Save Our Children, will again be the focus this year.?? During the month, Government day nurseries will open their doors from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays to familiarise persons with the work done there.??On those days, members of the public will also get an opportunity to view art work produced by the children and staff.
On Friday, May 4, a number of students will participate in the??National Children’s Service under the theme All God’s Children: Flowers in His Garden.?? It will be held at the Mile-and-a-Quarter Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Peter from 9:30 a.m.?? The sermon will be delivered by 13 year-old student of the Deighton Griffith Secondary School, Javani Alleyne, and there will be performances by a number of school children.?? Meanwhile, Saturday, May 5, will be observed as Children’s Sabbath, while on Children’s Sunday, May 6, churches are encouraged to integrate the youth into their services.
On Wednesday, May 9, fathers will come under the spotlight at a forum to be held at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael.?? The topic is: Are Good Fathers a Dying Breed? and the forum is being hosted by the Peoples Cathedral Men’s Fellowship and the Board.?? It will begin at 6:00 p.m.
A series of workshops on Parenting Towards Resilience and Success will be staged for the CCB’s staff on May 10, 17, 24 and 31, at the Resource Centre of the Sterling Children’s Home, St. Philip. All sessions will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Staff of the Child Care Board will become more familiar with the Chalky Mount area when they go on a nature trail walk on Saturday, May 12, starting at 7:00 a.m.?? Then, on Wednesday, May 16, members of the public are invited to view entries in the T-Shirt Design Competition being presented by children in foster and residential care.??The competition is being staged in association with the Customs Guards Social Club and prizes will be awarded for first to third places.?? Also on that day, foster care parents and potential foster parents will take part in a workshop on Stressors and Coping Strategies at the CCB Headquarters from 5:00 p.m.
Shattered in a Perfect World, a live dramatic presentation on the effects of child abuse, will be performed at the Frank Collymore Hall on Saturday, May 19, from 6:00 p.m.??Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.?? On Wednesday, May 23, a free matinee show has also been scheduled for school children at the Plantation Garden Theatre at 9:30 a.m.
On Thursday, May 24, it will be the turn of the operators and caregivers of private day care centres to participate in training, when a one-day seminar entitled Raising the Bar will be held at the Hugh Springer Auditorium, Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael. The seminar will begin at 8:45 a.m.??
