The Barbados Museum and Historical Society (BMHS), has received a donation of $50,000 from the People???s Republic of China.

Ambassador of the People???s Republic of China to Barbados, Wang Ke presented representatives of the BMHS with the financial donation during a ceremony last Friday, at the Museum???s Historic Garrison headquarters.

Ambassador Wang stated that the Embassy of the People???s Republic of China was pleased to donate to the BMHS??? exhibitions and public programmes, with the purpose of ???supporting the Museum to fulfil its responsibility and play a better role in public education???.

In thanking the People???s Republic of China for its support, Director of the BMHS, Alissandra Cummins, described the donation as timely, as her organisation had envisaged a special programme of events to celebrate Barbados??? 50th Anniversary of Independence.

She added that plans were already in place to publish and launch a major publication as the start to this programme. ???Such a generous gift as this enables the Museum to make a robust start to its fundraising efforts for this programme,??? she noted.

President of the BHMS??? Council, Sir Trevor Carmichael, expressed the view that such donations helped to ensure that future generations learned and understood Barbados??? strong heritage. He further acknowledged that the ???generous gift??? would help to strengthen the links between the two countries.

Ambassador Wang also indicated that the Embassy was willing to work with the Museum through co-hosting exhibitions, in particular, introducing to Barbadian society Chinese history, culture and development, so as to enhance the knowledge and understanding between the peoples of the Republic of China and Barbados.
