Two primary schools today received sporting equipment from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to assist them in the development of their physical education programmes.

China’s Ambassador to Barbados, Mr. Wei Qiang, presented footballs and volleyballs to the Westbury and Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary Schools, respectively, at the Westbury Primary School, Westbury, St. Michael.

Noting that China was now recognised worldwide as having held a successful 2008 Olympics where the Chinese team had received a number of medals, the Ambassador said that his country was keen to assist other nations in the development of their sporting activities.

He also encouraged students to ensure that they pursued excellence in every area of their academic lives.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Patrick Todd, thanked the Chinese Ambassador for his donation, noting that it would go a long way in providing a balanced experience for the children.

"The old adage says ???a healthy body means a healthy mind’, so we want you to study hard, but we also want you to have a well-balanced experience in school, which means time devoted to sports, as well as academics," he stressed.

Minister Todd also advised the students not to engage in bullying, disobedient or discourteous behaviour.
