The "tradition of excellence continues".

This is how Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, has described the talent and skills shown today by students of Christ Church Girls, at the start of their Healthy Lifestyle Week of Activities.

Speaking at the school in Water Street, Minister Jones commended its emphasis on excellence and "strong culture," noting that it had achieved great success in the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination this year, as well as sporting excellence in the National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championship.

As he urged students and teachers not to break with tradition but to let it continue, he said the school, along with Hindsbury Primary both "do quite well in various areas of activity and endeavour".??

He also spoke about of children achieving at different levels and warned against demeaning those who tried their best in the recent examination. "We should not denigrate, decry, curse, quarrel [with] or demean any of our children who we know went into that 11-plus to do well. It is not the school that will make you, but you who will make the school," Mr. Jones, stressed as he urged Class 4 students to take the same quality of good work into their various secondary schools.

Mr. Jones also announced that soon a hall would be provided by his Ministry since it was looking to make available a permanent cover for the school’s courtyard that would enhance it as a hall. According to the Minister, this would commence late in the summer vacation for completion by January 2012.

Meanwhile, Principal, Heather Bryan, in thanking Mr. Jones, disclosed that 118 girls sat the 2011 Common Entrance Examination and 16 of these received 90 per cent or over in English, while 36 received 90 per cent or over in Mathematics.?? With respect to Mathematics, she said three girls scored 100 per cent and one 99 per cent.?? She added that 109 out of the 118 girls also scored between 50 per cent and 96 per cent in English, while 100 scored between 50 and 100 per cent in Mathematics. And, she added, "Overall, our girls have done extremely well."

She noted that there had been an aspect of remedial teaching at the level of class four. "We knew they had the potential and when you can see children scoring 81 per cent in Mathematics and 78 in English… you know the teachers worked hard for these girls. The spirit of excellence will continue," Ms. Bryan indicated.
