Minister of Health, Donville Inniss

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and this island’s four district hospitals are now the beneficiaries of a generous donation of wheelchairs, walkers, canes and disaster kits courtesy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The items were presented to Minister of Health, Donville Inniss, this morning, at the Ministry of Health, Frank Walcott Building, Culloden Road, St. Michael.

Mr. Inniss said that while the cost of the donation was in the vicinity of US $30,000, the actual value was far more since it would help physically challenged persons to become more independent by allowing them to move around freely.?? He added that the donated items, which comprise, 300 wheelchairs; 20 walkers and 35 boxes containing 12 disaster kits each, would be put to good use to benefit the vulnerable in society.

The Health Minister praised the church for its continued support to health care since this was the third occasion it had made such a donation to the Ministry of Health. He added that the state could not do it alone and would have had to purchase the equipment from its own coffers had it not been for the commitment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Mr. Inniss used the occasion to issue an early reminder to Barbadians about the need to start preparing for the hurricane season.

"The hurricane season is upon us and, as usual, we have to be prepared and the donation of the 35 boxes of emergency supplies will boost the reserves of central government, and the Ministry of Health, as we prepare for the hurricane season.

"We pray that Barbados would not be affected by the ravages of a hurricane or other natural disasters but we have to be, at the same time, prepared. These items will be stored in a safe environment and deployed as needed. It is a timely reminder for Barbadians to start preparing for the onset of the rainy season and the hurricane season. We believe an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure," Mr. Inniss underlined.
