While the goal to have one university graduate per household is ambitious, there is also space for those who are trained by the City and Guilds Institution, as the country becomes more reliant on the service sector in the future.
Acting Prime Minister, Richard Sealy, made this observation today during a courtesy call with the Director General and Group Chief Executive Officer of City and Guilds, Chris Jones, the Director of International Operations, Mike Dawe, and Regional Manager of the City and Guilds Caribbean Office, Reverend Guy Hewitt.
During the meeting at Government Headquarters, the Acting Prime Minister said: "While it is good to have a university graduate in every household, I think the more realistic goal is to see that you can have tertiary training as widely available as possible, while recognising the importance of the services sector".
Mr. Jones, in underscoring the importance of skills training as a precursor to career advancement, disclosed that the institution would soon be implementing a new suite of engineering qualifications that would be linked to the Engineering Council in Britain.
"This demonstrate our philosophy to move away from entry level to a designation that would allow you to work your way through while you are employed.?? Thus, this is the fundamental difference between us [City and Guilds] and other institutions," Mr. Jones emphasised.
Mr. Sealy acknowledged that Barbados’ future resided in the services sector and noted that "Cave Hill [University of the West Indies] cannot do it alone and this is where City and Guilds would come in to take tertiary education to the next level".
City and Guilds was established over 125 years ago and has operations in over 80 countries.
