Earthquakes, tsunamis and other coastal hazards that are likely to affect Barbados will be in the spotlight during March, the month designated for Coastal Hazards Awareness.

During the month, which is being celebrated under the theme: Tsunami Smart Barbados, the Technical Standing Committee on Coastal Hazards will embark on a number of public awareness initiatives during the month. These will include a week of activities, which runs from Monday, March 17, until Friday, March 21.

During that week, Director of the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies??? St. Augustine Campus, Dr. Joan Latchman, will head a team to Barbados to participate in a number of activities to engage the public and key stakeholders.

On Monday, March 17, Dr. Latchman and her team will make presentations to primary school principals during a Tsunami Smart Teacher Training workshop in the Auditorium of the Barbados Community College, Ivy, St. Michael, beginning at 9:30 a.m.??This will be followed by the team engaging members of the public on the popular call-in programme Down to Brass Tacks from noon until 2:00 p.m.

The first of a series of Tsunami Smart Student workshops will also be held on the same day at the St. Silas Primary School, St. Silas, St. James, beginning at 1:00 p.m.??Meanwhile, members of the public are invited to a lunchtime seminar on Earthquakes and Tsunamis in Barbados on Tuesday, March 18, at the Grand Salle, Central Bank of Barbados, Church Village, St. Michael, beginning at noon. That lecture will be delivered by Director of the Seismic Research Centre, Dr. Joan Latchman.

In addition, the team will interact with the public during the television programme CBC Presents later the same day from 8:30 p.m.??The Tsunami Smart Student workshops will continue on Wednesday, March 19, with the team visiting the West Terrace Primary School, West Terrace, St. James, at 9:30 a.m., and the Good Shepherd Primary School, Fitts Village, St. James, from 1:00 p.m.

These visits will continue on Thursday, March 20, at the Gordon Greenidge Primary School, Rock Dundo, St. James, at 9:30 a.m. and at the St. Albans Primary School, St. Albans, St. James, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The final Tsunami Smart Student workshop will be held at the St. James Primary School, Trents, St. James, beginning at 1:00 pm.

Activities for the month will continue with the Caribewave 2014 exercise on Wednesday, March 26, which will take the form of an evacuation drill of the St. James Primary School beginning at 10:00 a.m.??This will be followed by a Moonlight Movie Night by the Sea at the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve, Holetown, St. James, on Saturday, March 29, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
