Senator Benn said: "We have embarked on the Modernisation of the National Standards Project with the primary objective of harmonising the national standards system in order to improve the country’s competitiveness; enhancing consumer protection, trade facilitation and market access." He added that this would "ensure Barbadian goods and services meet international requirements; allow the country to meet its obligations under the several trade agreements and treaties; and assist in developing a quality culture among producers and consumers alike."

The Minister remarked that online services had recently been implemented, which would allow the business community and the public to access, complete, submit and monitor the progress of application forms online. "Anyone can now complete and submit an application to the Supervisor of Insolvency for a Certificate of Good Standing and Trustee Licenses, he noted.

"Consumers can now also access and complete a complaint form and have their grievances investigated by the Office of Public Counsel", Mr. Benn said.??

He added that individuals and customs brokers would soon be able to apply online for an import or export licence, with this initiative expected to begin by month-end.
