Barbadians will have another opportunity to experience the best of Chinese culture with the staging of a concert featuring the Nanjing National Orchestra of China tomorrow, Tuesday, March 18, at 8.00 p.m. at the Sea Rocks Dome, Barbados Beach Club, Maxwell Coast Road, Christ Church.

Minister of Culture Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, will deliver remarks at the event, which form part of a thrust to enhance cultural exchanges between Barbados and China.

Earlier this year, during a courtesy call with Ambassador of China to Barbados, Wang Ke, the Minister stated that there was a need for increased cultural exchanges between the two nations.

At that time, he revealed that Barbadian films, dance and music would be showcased at the upcoming Caribbean Arts festival in China. Emphasising that the cultural industries must not be seen as a ???soft sector???, he added that culture would be developed to help boost the island???s economy.

Ambassador Wang said China had found ways to develop its culture and commercialise its art forms. She indicated the Chinese would be very receptive to the Caribbean Arts Festival because it was being staged during a festive holiday season in May. The envoy also noted that the creative sector enhances tourism and transcends language barriers.

The concert featuring the Nanjing National Orchestra of China is being hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Barbados in association with the Naniki Caribbean Jazz Safari.
