The Confucius Institute at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus is set to open its new offices this week in an official ceremony on Thursday, May 18, at the university.

Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones; and China’s Ambassador to Barbados, Wang Ke, will both address the event, which gets under way at 6:30 p.m.

Also expected to attend and deliver remarks are the Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor V. Eudine Barriteau; the Chairman of the Council of UWI’s partner university in Beijing, the China University of Political Science and Law, Professor Hu Ming; and the Deputy Director-General of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Jing Wei.

The ceremony will also signal the opening of the first ever Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in the Caribbean, scheduled to take place on May 18 and 19, at the Hilton Barbados Resort.

This is expected to see delegations from all seven Confucius Institutes and Classrooms from The Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago in attendance, along with their counterparts from Confucius Institute Headquarters and the China University of Political Science and Law.

A key objective of this joint initiative is to allow for the sharing of experiences in the region with regard to the teaching of Chinese and the facilitation of people-to-people relations between the Caribbean and China.
