Several constituents from St. Michael East were honored last night at an inaugural Awards Ceremony and Dinner held to celebrate their hard work and contributions to their community.
Themed: Saluting the Icons of Our Community, 15 persons were awarded in the areas of sports, tourism and hospitality, business, education, heritage and the environment, as well as their work with the special needs community.
In his address, Acting Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Senator Jepter Ince said he was “especially pleased” to be associated with an effort that recognised “the outstanding contributions of men, women and the youth of the constituency of St. Michael East, who have been making their community proud”.
He told the attendees, who had gathered in the LV Harcourt Lewis Training Centre to mark the occasion, that while the Constituency Council programme was “relatively new”, it was useful in adding value to the lives of ordinary men and women.
“One of the fundamental objectives of the Constituency Council programme is to improve the lives of residents by providing them with timely training. The programme is therefore focused on equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills that can enable them to reach maximum potential in terms of assessing employment, generating income and generally improving competencies,” he added.
Senator Ince said the St. Michael East constituency had “fully embraced this concept” and referenced the council’s work in providing unemployed and underemployed constituents with training in cake and pastry making, as well as beauty services.
The Acting Minister congratulated the awardees for their “unwavering, unstinting and unselfish work and service” to the development of the community and Barbados.
