Government’s draft Cultural Industries Development Bill will come under the microscope during a one-day consultation on Saturday, February 25, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
Minister of Culture, Stephen Lashley, will deliver remarks, while Director of the Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Dr. Keith Nurse, will make a presentation on cultural industries.
During the discussions, Permanent Secretary in the Division of Culture and Sports, Shirley Farnum, will give an overview of the legislation, while there will be presentations by Chief Cultural Officer, Andrea Wells; an official from CARICOM; the Chief Executive Officer of the Copyright Society of Composers Authors & Publishers Inc., Erica Smith; and Chairman of B-Copy, Antonio Rudder, who is a member of the Regional Task Force on Culture.
There will also be working group sessions for those involved in the performing arts, music, literary arts/publishing, visual arts (craft, heritage, fine art and photography), and design, among others. ??A number of institutions, including the Small Business Association, the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, the Barbados Tourism Authority and the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries Inc., will also participate in the talks.
The Cultural Industries Development Bill is aimed at providing incentives for stakeholders to facilitate and encourage sustainable growth in this island’s cultural sector.
Cultural industries include those activities which provide the public with commercially viable cultural goods and services, developed for reproduction and distribution to mass audiences. These include products and services like films, videos, television programmes, musical instruments, sound recordings, commercial theatre, dance, books, magazines, newspapers, journals,??architecture, design, popular music performances, software, CD-ROMS and other related products.
