Acting Chief Education Officer, Laurie King (FP)

Over 100 stakeholders in education will gather tomorrow, Thursday, April 7, beginning at 9:00 a.m., at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre for a consultation on The National Teaching Council and the Regional Standards of Performance for the Teaching Profession.

They will comprise senior officials and technical staff in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, as well as principals and teachers from primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions, who will seek to understand the current thinking in the region as it relates to teacher councils and standards.

The group will also aim to move the agenda forward on teacher professionalism, teacher licensing, training and quality assurance in the profession.

A collaborative effort between the Ministry and the Barbados Union of Teachers, the meeting will be officially addressed by the Acting Chief Education Officer, Laurie King, who is expected to bring the Ministry’s perspective on the two main issues of the consultation.?? This follows a review of draft proposals that were widely disseminated to educational stakeholders.

The national consultation will be facilitated by CARICOM’s Programme Manager for Human Development, Dr. Morella Joseph, and Consultant with CARICOM, Dr. Paula Mark, who is also a teacher and education specialist in Trinidad. The former will examine The National Teaching Council while the latter will address Standards of Performance for the Teaching Profession.

It is expected that at the end of the national consultation, participants would lend feedback to the Education Ministry, allowing it to be better informed and able to give a broader perspective to CARICOM as it seeks to harmonise the teaching profession across the region.
