A call has gone out for more local business houses to donate to the Ministry of Health HIV/AIDS Food Bank.

Community Nutrition Officer with the Food Bank, Donna Barker, made this appeal today as she accepted a donation of just over $600.00 from the Barbados Government Information Services’ (BGIS) HIV and AIDS Education Committee.??

The funds were raised at Agrofest, last month, when over 300 persons participated in the raffle and quiz at the BGIS booth. Ms. Barker commended the committee for its support over the years.??"The BGIS HIV committee has donated food, money, clothing and toiletries to the Food Bank.??Staff and other partners also bring in plastics, metals, and glass as part of a recycling initiative.?? The recyclables are then bought by B’s Recycling and the funds are donated to the Food Bank.??This has been a great help on a monthly basis, because demand by our clients is constant," she said.??

Health care providers usually refer those clients, who may have social and economic challenges, to the Food Bank. These clients are also given information about how to make the best nutritious use of the food provided.

In her remarks, BGIS HIV Committee member, Lisa Bayley, praised both the sponsors and participants for "contributing to the worthy cause", despite the difficult economic times.??"The HIV/AIDS Food Bank is always in need of donations. When you go back to your respective businesses, I urge you to find out how you and your staff can make regular contributions. See yourselves as more than just sponsors or recipients of a prize. See your selves as ambassadors of the cause," she implored.

Today, 21 winners drew their prizes, donated by: Atlantis Seafood, Atlantis Submarines Barbados Inc., Bodies In Motion/Books R Tremendous, Caves of Barbados Inc., Capoeira Barbados, Chris the Barber, Divi Southwinds Beach Resort Barbados, First Caribbean International Bank, Flawless, Patricks Horse Riding Academy, Pirate’s Inn, Sandy’s Hair Salon, Steak House, Tall Ships, The Barbados Museum and Historical Society, Kibibi Beauty and Nails and Ultimate U Beauty Salon.

Corporate Barbados was also encouraged to volunteer time or join the "Adopt-A-Shelf" Project.
