Minister of Youth, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo????

Corporate Barbados is being encouraged to "become a part of youth development".

This appeal came today from Minister of Youth, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, as she was presented with 15 prizes from corporate Barbados, which will be given to some outstanding young people during the National Youth Awards Ceremony this Sunday, November 15.

Dr. Byer Suckoo told the business people they could assist her Ministry in a number of areas. "Right now, we have a challenge in the Barbados Youth Service when it comes to our work programme and finding places for our young people to do their job attachment. Those are areas we know corporate Barbados can help us with, so we will be talking to you," she stated.

The Minister reminded those present that the nation’s youth and their development would impact on all Barbadians. She continued: "How we treat our children is going to come back to us one day. We have to invest in our children because, one day, they will run the country, the world, our homes and our communities; and by investing in them, we are certainly going to guarantee to some degree that we are creating for ourselves later on a more comfortable and progressive Barbados…

"So, we all have to have an interest in what happens to our young people. We will not be insulated from what happens with them and from what happens in our community if we don’t invest in our young people."

Dr. Byer Suckoo thanked the business community for providing some of the prizes, suggesting that their involvement would add value to the Youth Awards. She said her Ministry was trying to make the event more meaningful for the "positive young people who deserve to be showcased".

Those companies contributing to the Youth Awards include Video Production Services, Dykon Developments, Anfield Law Chambers, the City of Bridgetown Credit Union, Greenleaf Designs Inc., Sports & Games, Butterfly Memoirs and the Spa and Therapy Clinic.

The Youth Awards will be held at Hilton Barbados from 4:30 p.m. under the theme, "Celebrating Our Differences", and several prizes will be presented to Barbadians who have excelled in various areas.
