The Caribbean Organisation of Tax Administrators (COTA) is moving forward with plans for the 25th General Assembly and Technical Conference.

Following the two-day meeting of the COTA Executive Council, hosted by the Barbados Revenue Authority, the eight-member group outlined a provisional programme for the conference scheduled for July 2019 in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Tax Administration Jamaica’s representative on the executive council, Meris Haughton, chaired the session. She highlighted COTA’s role and importance to the region.

She explained: “As an integrating institution operating under the CARICOM Secretariat, COTA seeks to advance the interest of tax administrations in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) through information exchange and joint training initiatives among tax administrators in the region.

“One of the major activities in the COTA work plan is the biennial General Assembly and Technical Conference. The aim of this event is to provide COTA members with a forum to meet, discuss and deliberate on a number of tax issues, exchange ideas and share experiences on challenges faced by tax administrations in the region.”

Among the other issues discussed at the Executive Council meeting were collaboration with the Caribbean Technical Assistance Centre, signing on to the Network of Tax Organisations Memorandum of Understanding, the reform of corporation tax in CARICOM member states, next steps for CARICOM States in relation to the OECD Tax Governance Initiative and the modernization of excise management practices.
