Thousands of frontline personnel who have been working tirelessly in the fight against COVID-19 will be recognised for their sacrifice during a special ceremony on National Heroes Day.

Government is planning to honour these persons by presenting them with Humanitarian Awards at Kensington Oval on Thursday, April 28, at 10:00 a.m.

Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, President of Barbados, is expected to present a number of awards during the event, which will be televised live.

Awards will be given in the categories of Freedom of Barbados, Gold Award of Achievement, Humanitarian medals and lapel pins. Over 5,000 persons will be awarded Humanitarian medals and pins. Countries and agencies that played a significant role in the COVID-19 campaign will receive plaques.

Among the special guests will be Secretary General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Ian Gooding-Edghill, will deliver remarks during the ceremony, which will see performances by local artistes, backed by the Band of the Barbados Police Service.

A special Park and Ride system will be in place by the Transport Board and buses will leave from the following locations from 6:30 a.m. on the day: Wildey Gymnasium, Wildey, St. Michael; Queen’s College, Husbands, St. James; the BTI Car Park, The City, and NCF Headquarters, West Terrace, St. James. The roundtrip fare is $7.00.
