Director of the Commission for Pan African Affairs (CPAA), Dr. Ikael Tafari, is anxious to see the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus engaging in student exchange programmes with African universities.

He made the disclosure yesterday, while meeting with Ghana’s High Commissioner to Barbados, Cecilia Gyan Amoah,  at the Commission’s Hincks Street Office.

According to Dr. Tafari, “even if at the outset, there is a distance programme via the Internet where students in Ghana and Barbados are allowed to be aware of each other, cultural and educational exchanges as well as economic exchanges are among some of the linkages Barbados could forge with Ghana in the future”.

He added that every year there were student exchanges with Canadian and American universities and it was about time Barbados sought to get similar programmes with African universities.

High Commissioner Amoah said the idea was one that she would consider “to see how soon and possible such a programme could be in place”.

The CPAA Director noted that the Commission believed that  Barbados and the Caribbean’s future, in a very real sense, depended on moving closer to the African countries in the areas of education and possibly tourism.
