The Ministry of Youth, Family and Sports is preparing to launch a new initiative soon which will involve the Cricket Legends of Barbados going into communities across the island to share their wealth of knowledge and experiences.

This disclosure came last Friday from the Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, while addressing the official opening of the Cricket Museum at Herbert House, Fontabelle.

Mr. Lashley said the partnership would enable the youth to interact with the Legends as they told stories about their struggles and how they triumphed by utilising the sport of cricket. "In so doing, we intend to present our youth with live examples with which they can identify and Barbadian role models who can be easily emulated," he told his audience.

Mr. Lashley further stated that his Ministry was eagerly looking forward to working with the Legends to elevate sports in Barbados and develop "a cadre of Legends to which your mantle can be passed".

The Cricket Legends of Barbados comprise 41 former Barbadian players who have represented the West Indies and contributed significantly to the team’s growth and success.

The Minister of Sports noted that for a country this size, Barbados had produced some of the world’s greatest cricketers and he listed some as Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Clyde Walcott, and Sir Frank Worrell. "This is an accomplishment that has established this country at the forefront of the global cricketing arena. It is only appropriate, therefore, that such excellence in our national sport be preserved for the world to share," he argued.

While congratulating the Legends for the creation of the Museum, Mr. Lashley described the initiative as "a stroke of mastery" and truly characteristic of the brilliance they had demonstrated through the years.

The Museum offers visitors a unique perspective on the sport through many nostalgic photos and priceless memorabilia of some of the greatest players of the game. It will be open Mondays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
