Reducing Crime and Violence in Our Communities will take centre stage when the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit (CJRPU) observes Crime Awareness Month 2017, from November 1 to 30.

A number of activities highlighting and prompting discussion on the objectives of the various organisations of the criminal justice system, including crime prevention, will take place this month.

In this regard, a series of town hall meetings will be held to allow for discussion on various issues. The first of these meetings will focus on the topic: Tackling Gun Violence in Our Communities and takes place on Wednesday, November 1, at the Princess Margaret Secondary School, Six Roads, St. Philip.

This will be followed by the second town hall meeting entitled: Parenting and Socialisation in a Changing Society, on Wednesday, November 8, at the Alexandra School, Queen’s Street, St. Peter.

The final town hall meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 22, at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, Constitution Road, St. Michael, and will focus on the topic: Culture and Its Impact on Violence. All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m.

A church service will be held on Sunday, November 5, under the sub-theme: The Role of the Church in Reducing Violence in our Communities, at the New Dimension Ministries, Barbarees Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

A public lecture will be hosted by the CJRPU, in collaboration with the Royal Barbados Police Force, on Thursday, November 23, at the Prince Cave Hall, District “A” Police Station, Station Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The topic will be The Changing Nature of the Public’s Attitude Towards Crime.
