Stakeholders in the Barbadian criminal justice system will put their heads together with the National Task Force on Crime Prevention (NTFCP) this Friday, September 21, to focus on possible solutions to gender-based violence.

This crime sensitisation seminar is slated for the L.V. Harcourt Lewis Training Facility on Belmont Road.

Hosted by the NTFCP as a segment of the current crime awareness month activity, the seminar will examine “the various policy initiatives currently being undertaken to address the very serious issue of gender-based violence”.

The agency is hopeful of being able “to chart the way forward in establishing a practical solution to this situation”.

To this end, it has roped in clinical psychologist Dr. Peter Weller of the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, to make a presentation on “policies which he has been instrumental in implementing to facilitate the eradication of this issue, in various other Caribbean territories”.

High Court Judge, Madame Justice Jacqueline Cornelius, will deliver the feature address at this one-day forum, whose agenda includes a presentation by NTFCP Project Officer, Modupe Sodeyi, on the findings of a femicide study, and a paper by the Bureau of Gender Affairs.

An open discussion on the way forward will wrap up the day’s deliberations.
