A health education seminar, focused on food safety and targeted at all those who will be involved in selling food at Crop Over events, takes place on Thursday, July 20.

Principal Environmental Health Officer at the Branford Taitt Polyclinic, Anthony Small, stressed that it was important for operators of food businesses and all their food handlers to attend the seminar, which takes place at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church and Cultural Centre, Black Rock Main Road, St. Michael, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Environmental Health Department has also reminded food vendors that they must be in possession of a valid permit to operate a temporary restaurant at these events and applications must be made to the Department closest to where the event is being staged.

Applications must be made at least two weeks before the event. For example, July 21 is the closing date for applications related to activities taking place over the period August 4 to August 7, the climax of Crop Over 2017.

The Department explained that this allowed for inspection of the applicant’s premises “to ensure that conditions are conducive to the preparation of food that is wholesome for human consumption”.

Operators are further reminded that all food handlers must be in possession of a valid medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner. A medical certificate will be considered valid if it was issued in 2017, and will expire on December 31, 2017.
