Minister of Creative Economy and Culture, John King, has issued a call for Barbadians, visitors and persons from within the diaspora to help transform this nation.

Speaking to the media during a press conference at River Bay earlier today, Minister King underscored that persons would have the opportunity to assist in this transformation through the upcoming We Gatherin’ celebrations.

“We Gatherin’ 2020 is designed to be a catalyst for change – to assist in futureproofing Barbados to meet some of its medium term and 2030 development goals to focus the efforts of every Barbadians on rebuilding a sense of national pride and renewing valued traditions and to reinvest in transforming us into a world class Barbados brand of excellence,” the Culture Minister stated.

Minister King alluded to the various opportunities that would be afforded as a result of We Gatherin’, and pointed out that there was scope for diaspora partnerships and trade and investment prospects. 

“Many benefits will accrue to us as a result of this project…enhancing the community tourism offering based on a platform of a dynamic 52-week calendar of national and community-based events for locals and visitors; increasing revenue generation and wealth creation opportunities at the community level; influencing a national appreciation of heritage and enhancing the national heritage tourism product; and providing the opportunity for Bajans to trace their roots and lineage at our Genealogy Marketplaces,” he outlined.

Mr. King reaffirmed his Ministry’s excitement for the activities and events scheduled for We Gatherin’ which would showcase Barbados’ people and culture.

“We are pleased to note that all of the proposed activities and initiatives have strong arts, culture, heritage and sports underpinnings and I know that the entire value chain of tourism, arts and culture will benefit from the year-long calendar of activities, and most importantly, there will be significant social, economic and environmental impact and benefits to the people of Barbados from this project,” he maintained.
