One Government Minister is looking forward to the establishment of the proposed National Art Gallery.

Minister of Family, Culture, Youth and Sports, Stephen Lashley, highlighted the importance of such an initiative during his address at the opening ceremony of the 2010 NIFCA Visual Arts and Photography Preview, held last weekend at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

"I hope that accommodation for the National Art Gallery will become available in the not too distant future, so that affordable Government-owned exhibition space will be accessible to local artists for the exhibition of their art," he said.

The Minister pointed out that there were limitations on the artists due to the absence of a "dedicated exhibition space", and maintained that the National Art Gallery would be a solution.

"Remedying this deficiency is a key plank in our strategy for ensuring the existence of basic infrastructure for arts development in the immediate future," Mr. Lashley stated.

He, however, added that "the ongoing needs of artists or even the anticipated increase in demand for exhibition space for the NIFCA programme, now means that we will have to accelerate the force of the provision of exhibition facilities; and we are starting along this path."??sharifa.medford@barbados.gov.bb
