Thirty farmers are on their way to being trained in Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ), following a pre-registration and sensitisation meeting arranged through the Rural Development Commission???s (RDC) Rural Rising Banner programme.

Facilitated by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, the meeting was held at the Commission???s Bridge Street office under the theme: Improving Productivity in Agriculture through Competency-Based Training.

Overall, 220 workers will have the opportunity to be trained in Agro Processing, Crop Production, Butchery, Livestock Rearing, Rabbit Rearing and Tree Crop Farming, leading to the attainment of a CVQ.

In his remarks, Director of the RDC, Randolph Outram, acknowledged the importance of this type of training, and stated that Competency-Based Training would address the skills, knowledge and abilities needed for the agricultural sector in Barbados, to which the key component is ???skills for the future???.

Mr. Outram also lauded the farmers who chose to register, saying that they were strategically positioning themselves to attaining a qualification at the Technical and Vocational Education and Training level in their respective courses.

The first rounds of training began on Monday, June 15, in Agro-food Processing Level 1 and Crop Production Level 1 and are being held at Lester Vaughan School and St. George Secondary respectively.

The Rural Rising Programme is designed to promote the programmes and activities of the RDC. It also supports Government???s Human Resource Development Strategy, which is aimed at improving the quality and relevance of secondary education.
