The Czech Republic is officially seeking to have an honourary consulate established in Barbados.??

The request was made by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic, Edita Hrda, during a courtesy call on the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Steven Blackett, shortly after the two signed a Double Taxation Agreement between Barbados and the Czech Republic.

Citing this move as critical, the Envoy acknowledged that Barbados "is a hub for relations between the islands of the Eastern Caribbean in many areas including business and travel."??

The Ambassador, who is accredited to 11 Caribbean countries, said that Barbados is one of the Czech Republic’s largest trade partners in the Caribbean and Latin American region.?? Ambasador Hrda added that she was pleased to see Skoda cars, which are made in the Czech Republic, on the roads of Barbados.??

Minister Blackett, in accepting the commendations pointed out that Barbados currently exports contact lenses, spectacles, goggles and rum to the Czech Republic.

Barbados established diplomatic relations with the Czech Republic through its former state, Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in September 1977.?? The Czech Republic came into being on January 1, 1993, and Barbados agreed to maintain relations with the new State.

The Czech Republic is considered one of the most developed and industrialised economies in Central and Eastern Europe.??
