The Barbados Dairy and Meat Producers Association presented a quantity of milk to the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs on Wednesday, for distribution to vulnerable segments of the Barbadian community, in response to COVID-19.

President of the Association, Annette Beckett, at the handover ceremony at the Barbados Agricultural Society’s (BAS) headquarters, said the association was happy to join with other commodity groups within the BAS to help the less fortunate.

Describing milk as a very important part of the diet, she said the association felt compelled to reach out to the Ministry with responsibility for social services, which would ensure that the most needy benefited from the donation.

Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Cynthia Forde, accepted the donation and thanked the association for its generosity.

She noted: “Over the last three months, we in the Ministry have been working day and night to bring a level of comfort to the most vulnerable people in this society, and it has been an extremely arduous task.”

She praised benefactors such as the Barbados Dairy and Meat Producers Association, the business community, the faith-based organizations as well as many volunteers who came on board to assist. Ms. Forde also lauded the fisherfolk and pig farmers who previously made donations.

Organizations expected to benefit from the milk donation include children’s homes, Lancaster House, the Vauxhall Senior Citizens’ Village, the Clyde Gollop Centre and the Geriatric Hospital.
