The Natural Heritage Department’s (NHD), ???De Heart Uh Barbados’ Junior Race has been dubbed a major success.

According to the NHD’s Technical Officer and one of the organisers, Rosene Reid, close to 100 students from four secondary and three primary schools participated in Thursday’s inaugural event which formed part of the activities to mark Environment Month.

"It was very successful. We sent out the information relatively late, and I was very happy that they were able to participate and receive excellent prizes as well," she explained.

Hillaby Turner’s Hall Primary school copped first place in the under 11 girls’ team category, and second place in the boys’ under 11 category; while St. Matthew’s Primary topped the boys under 11’s, as well as placed second in the girls’.

For the under 13’s Bailey’s Primary did a double, copping first place in both the boys’ and girls’ team categories; while St. Matthew’s placed second in the girls’ and Hillaby Turner’s Hall and St. Matthew’s Primary were second and third respectively, in the boys’.

For the seniors, Springer Memorial Secondary claimed the first and second prizes for the girls’ under 15 team, while Lester Vaughan and Princess Margaret respectively, did the same in the boys’ category.

Princess Margaret also copped first place in the boys’ under 20, while there was no girls’ team represented.

Myriad prizes, including bags, mugs, caps, towels, natural products, pottery and gift vouchers from retail stores, sports shops and supermarkets were presented to winning schools and individuals.

Meanwhile, Ms. Reid?? said all systems were on go for tomorrow’s, ???De Heart Uh Barbados’ 5 Kilometre (K) Walk and 10K Run, which get under way from 6:00 p.m. at the Natural Heritage Department, Sturges, St. Thomas.

"Close to 100 runners will be participating in the event. We are expecting a very high turnout. The walkers have always come out in their numbers, but this year we are expecting even more runners, with a number [of them] expected to come in from other Caribbean countries including Trinidad, Guyana, St. Lucia, Tortola, Jamaica, Dominica and Aruba," she explained.

Noting that the Caribbean contingent has been participating for the past five years, the NHD spokesperson said as usual, "they will be staying with families within the community."

The first prize for the 5 K walk is $500, the second $300 and the third $200. For the 10K run, the first prize is $750 and a trip to a Caribbean destination, while the second is $500 and the third $400.

Special community prizes will also be awarded.
