The deadline is fast approaching for the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Eastern Caribbean Office sponsored essay and poster competitions.

Participants have until Friday, October 26, to get their entries in to the BGIS, Bay Street, St. Michael.

Open to students between the ages of seven and 16 years, the competitions focus on the topic Child Sexual Abuse Through My Eyes: How Do I Protect Myself?

The essay competition targets two categories of secondary school students – First to Third Formers, and Fourth and Fifth Formers while the poster competition is designed for primary school students in Classes One and Two, and Classes Three and Four.

It is expected that through participation, children and adolescents would deepen their knowledge of child sexual abuse and understand its manifestations.?? It is also hoped that participants would be better equipped to protect themselves from such abuse and learn of the support services available to survivors.

In addition, the competitions seek to provide avenues for children and adolescents to express themselves on any ???burning’ issues which may be impacting them and to raise public awareness on the effects of child sexual abuse.

Judging for both competitions is scheduled to take place from Monday, October 29, to Friday, November 9.

The BGIS/UNICEF Essay and Poster Competitions were initiated in 2011 as the country marked the 21st anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Further information on the competitions may be obtained by contacting Marketing Officer with the BGIS, Ronny Yearwood, at 426-2232/42, or via email marketingbgis@barbados.gov.bb.
