Persons who show up for work but fail to consistently perform to the best of their ability should be dealt with.
Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association, John Williams, made this suggestion yesterday while addressing the opening ceremony for A Week of Excellence.?? It was held at the Grande Salle, Tom Adams Financial Centre.
He added: "Should we not also consider a mechanism for dealing with those persons who consistently fail to deliver what is normal expectation??? I also ask you to consider this challenge during your deliberation."
Mr. Williams also urged participants to use the Week of Excellence to employ creativity in the decision making process as the impetus for building a stronger economy.??
"We must also understand that while the onus is on the employer to recognise and award employee excellence, there is also the responsibility on the part of the employee to bring about excellence so that there would be something to be recognised," he added.
Meanwhile, Senior Economist in the Ministry of Finance’s Research and Planning Unit, Bertram Johnson, who spoke on behalf of Permanent Secretary,
Dr. Louis Woodroofe, proffered the view that the tough economic and financial challenges called for a "burst of" creative thinking by employers and employees in their business operations.
"The recognition of this reality requires us not to retreat in our bunkers…I allude to this because creativity, innovation and business sophistication are important pillars for growth and must be pursued in order to enhance our level of productivity and competitiveness.?? In essence, our foundation for growth must now be based on?? a compulsion to innovate, sharpen strategies, tighten our vision and unite employees behind a well-crafted development agenda," he surmised.
