The Deighton Griffith and the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Schools fought off stiff competition from Combermere’s A and B debating teams to emerge the winners of the preliminary rounds of the fifth National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) science and lecture series and debating competition.

In the first sessions held at the Grand Salle, Tom Adams Financial Centre, Bridgetown, on Monday, Combermere’s A team and Deighton Griffith, debated the topic: The recent heavy rainfall and resulting flooding episodes are a direct result of climate change.

The following day, Tuesday, December 9, students from the SDA and Combermere’s B debating teams rivaled each other on the topic: Industrial development must take priority over the preservation of the environment.

The NCST’s Senior Technical Officer, Arlene Weekes, was heartened by the students’ presentations and said: “The students have approached the competition with enthusiasm.  I was also impressed by the research which they have put into the topics, and I am confident that those students, who have participated in the programme, would go on to do well,” she added.

The preliminaries continue tomorrow, Thursday, December 11, at the Grand Salle beginning at 10:00. The overall winner will receive the Minister’s Challenge Trophy when the finals are held in March 2009.

The second place winner will travel to Trinidad and Tobago to represent the country at the Caribbean Youth Science Forum in August, while other prizes will be presented to participants who showed remarkable skills and submitted well researched material.
