Girl Guides will learn more about how their association can assist in reducing the impact of a disaster on the island.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 12, Director of Emergency Services, Judy Thomas, visits the headquarters of the Girl Guides at Pax Hill, St. Michael, at 3:00 p.m. to promote disaster risk reduction as part of International Day of Disaster Reduction 2011.

Guides will watch an earthquake video funded by the Caribbean Department Emergency Management Agency, which will demonstrate what to do during a hazard.??

Meanwhile, on Thursday, October 13, International Day for Disaster Reduction, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) will make simultaneous presentations of hazard mitigation materials to students at the Lester Vaughan School, in St. Thomas and the West Terrace Primary School, in St. James, at 8:30 a.m.

Deputy Director of the DEM, Hazel Todd, will make the presentation at the Lester Vaughan School during morning assembly, while Director, Judy Thomas will hand over material to the West Terrace Primary School during their morning assembly.

International Day for Disaster Reduction is designed to raise awareness about disaster risk reduction and actions being undertaken by communities globally, which are aimed at addressing their individual risk, through the implementation of various mitigation strategies. The overall aim is to encourage citizens and governments to build risk reduction into development planning, to ensure disaster resilient communities and nations.
