The semi-finals of the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) will start tomorrow, Friday, October 4, at 6:00 p.m. at the Lester Vaughn Secondary School, Cane Garden, St. Thomas.

Being held under the slogan Dis Is We Ting, the island???s premier arts festival, which is now celebrating its 40th anniversary, is organised by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF).

Emerging during the nation-building period of the 1970s, NIFCA represents the surge towards cultural and artistic independence that the Right Excellent Errol Barrow had imagined in the sixties.

As many as 900 people participated in the performing arts that first year, with 200 in creative writing, while over 850 pieces were submitted in the visual arts and craft categories. Since coming under the aegis of the NCF, NIFCA has become an even bigger celebration in which Barbadians from across race, class and ethnic groups portray their creative and cultural identities for the nation to see.

Semi-finals will run until Monday, October 14. The finals will commence on Thursday, October 31, and continue to Tuesday, November 5.
