Activities designed for Persons with Disabilities should be similar to those for able-bodied persons.

It was to this end that Special Envoy for Persons with Disabilities, Roslyn Hurley, teamed up with the National Disabilities Unit (NDU) to stage the Fun Walk/Ride event followed by a picnic, last month.

During a presentation yesterday for the successful participants of the Fun Walk/ Ride event, Ms. Hurley stated that the concept for the initiative was inspired by the annual walking events hosted by the Barbados Cancer Society and the late Olga Lopes Seale. "Why not the disabled? Why can’t we ride, skip, skate, do whatever we can do, once we get there?" Ms. Hurley queried.

She further stressed that Barbadians needed to "move away from the thinking that persons are only born with a disability".

"Right now most of the people I am seeing were normal working persons in the community, playing an important role…and then they developed a disability," Ms. Hurley said.

During the ceremony, Member Relations Officer of the City of Bridgetown Co-operative Credit Union, Winston Alleyne, presented four participants with monetary donations. They were: Brian Padmore, Keron Burnett, Sherry Brewster and Zaviar Greenidge.

Mr. Alleyne stated that the organisation was built for its members, some of whom have a disability. This, he emphasised, was one of the reasons why they were willing to assist in the venture. The COB Founding Member also assured the NDU and Ms. Hurley that the Credit Union would continue to provide such initiatives in the future.
