Officers of the various District Emergency Organisations (DEOs) across the island who will be deployed to emergency shelters during times of disaster, will soon be better equipped with the know-how to deal with persons with disabilities.

This comes as the National Disabilities Unit (NDU) stages a two day workshop entitled How to Relate to Persons with Disabilities (at Emergency Shelters), at United Nations House, Hastings, Christ Church, this Thursday, June 23, and next Thursday, June 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

Assistant Director of the NDU, Lloyd Springer, deemed it a "very important event" and said that it "pertains not only to social duty, but also to national responsibility."

Representatives from the 30 DEOs will learn lifting techniques for persons who are immobile, as well as how to relate to persons who have intellectual challenges, visual and hearing impairments.

Former President of the Barbados Council for the Disabled, Boneta Phillips; Chief Physiotherapist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Jerry Warner; and Special Envoy for Persons with Disabilities, Roslyn Hurley, are among those persons scheduled to make presentations.
