Division of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.

The Division of Youth Affairs launched its campaign of 50 Days of Activism for Youth (DAY) on August 12, as part of its celebrations to recognise Youth International Day.

During the 50-DAY campaign, the Division will host a number of activities, which will culminate on Wednesday, September 30, Caribbean Youth Day.

According to Principal Youth Development Officer, John Hollingsworth, “the 50-DAY campaign will focus on celebrating youth achievements, increasing awareness of their issues, developing strategies for youth to cope with emerging challenges and advocating for societal change to increase opportunities for their engagement in all sectors.”

Thus far, the Division has observed World Entrepreneurship Day on August 21, where 17 participants from the Ministry’s Building Blocks Project two-week training course Set Up For Success graduated, and on August 23, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition.

The remaining special dates during the campaign are: Tuesday, September 8, International Literacy Day; Monday, September 21, International Day of Peace; and Monday, September 28, International Day for Universal Access to Information. From Sunday, September 27, to Saturday, October 3, the Division will celebrate National Youth Week.

To commemorate International Literacy Day on Tuesday, the Division is inviting the public to its Book Drive, where members of the public are asked to donate books, in good condition, to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment for dissemination to schools. And based on their relevance and age appropriateness, they will be passed on to relevant educational institutions for addition to their libraries.

International Day of Peace activities will be held under the theme Shaping Peace Together. On this day, the Ministry will host a media launch of its Anti-Violence Campaign (AVC).

Persons under the age of 30 are encouraged to participate in the Division’s AVC competition to develop posters/jingles/videos to be used in the campaign.

Entries for the AVC competition must be submitted by Friday, September 11, to Principal Youth Development Officer, John Hollingsworth, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael.
