Matters related to Occupational Safety and Health were high on the agenda today when officials of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security met with a regional expert in this area at the Ministry’s headquarters in Warrens.

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, led talks with Deputy Director of Safety and Health at Work Management Systems in Mexico, Luis Antonio Miranda Cid, who is also in Barbados to share his expertise with locals at a workshop organised by the Ministry.

Noting that Government considered issues of safety extremely important, Dr. Byer Sukoo underscored the need to ensure that all the necessary structures were put in place to encourage safe practices at work.?? She added that she was willing to draw on some of the best practices used in Mexico to develop an improved programme in this area for Barbados.

In turn, Mr Cid gave some insight into how the safety management system in his country operated and pointed out that its implementation accounted for a 50 to 80 per cent drop in accidents in the workplace.

Both parties pledged to work closer together and continue to share best practices.??
