The draft Strategic Management Plan for the institutional strengthening of the Soil Conservation Unit (SCU) will be presented during a workshop scheduled for Codrington College, St. John, on Friday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m.

The workshop, which will be addressed by Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, would also be used to discuss the findings and recommendations outlined in the draft report in an effort to develop a final document to carry the SCU into the future.

This programme falls under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) sub-regional project entitled: LDC-SIDS Targeted Portfolio Approach to Sustainable Land Management.

It was designed to promote the improvement of management practices, institutional arrangements, policies and incentives aimed at the attenuation of land degradation on fragile and unique ecosystems of small islands in the Caribbean.

The project started in January 2011 and had three major components – the institutional review of the SCU, the development of a geographical information system for land management, and the development of a communications strategy for sustainable land management.

Under the institutional review component consulting team, Droiterre Inc., met and gathered information from stakeholders within the SCU and the Ministry of Agriculture. That information was used to prepare a draft Strategic Management Plan for the Institutional Strengthening of the SCU.
