Agencies providing drug education and harm reduction services for young people in Barbados will over the next two days assess their usefulness, based on a study that proposes all-inclusive answers to substance use challenges.

Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs Freundel Stuart will open this examination of the survey findings on “developing comprehensive responses to drug demand and harm reduction in Barbados,” at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, November 18, in a Grand Barbados Beach Resort conference room.

Seminar hosts, National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA) and representatives from the criminal justice system, health, training, education and community development will discuss the results “in an effort to assess the applicability of harm reduction approaches in the barbadian context”.

Funded by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the investigation and analysis focused on young people between the ages of 12 and 29, in searching for an understanding of how drug use and its related harm could be reduced among this age group.

The study examined the current drug education and harm reduction methods used by institutions providing services for these persons; explored the attitudes and experiences of young persons with regard to substance use, and obtained the views of youths on the available drug-related programmes. (TA)
