Barbados??? rich heritage was shared with the Earl and Countess of Wessex today when they were taken on tour of the Nidhe Israel (Jewish) Synagogue and Museum in Bridgetown.??

Their Royal Highnesses arrived at the Jewish Synagogue at about 2:20 p.m. and were met by Minister of Culture, Stephen Lashley, and an entourage. Director of the Museum, Paul Altman, gave a brief history of the synagogue, which was established in 1654 and completely destroyed in 1831.????

Mr. Altman said the Jewish community was very proud of their synagogue and equally delighted that it had played a part in Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison receiving the UNESCO World Heritage Designation.??

He also told the Earl and Countess of Wessex that the Jewish community was honoured by their visit.??

The royal couple also toured the Mikvah, which is a Jewish ritual bath, and the Nidhe Israel Museum.??

The synagogue was sold in 1929 and used for offices. However, it was completely restored by several benefactors in the 1980???s and is used for worship by the local Jewish community and visitors.
